We all used to hear that we should pursue a STEM degree instead of arts as the latter wouldn't earn as much in the future job market. But has anyone checked if this is actually true? Do STEM graduates truly earn more than Arts graduates in today's market? Coz me and many of my arts friends are working as lawyers, consultants, bankers etc and doing pretty well financially...

the idea that STEM degrees always lead to higher earnings than Arts degrees is a bit of an oversimplification... Anyway, it's true that some STEM fields, like engineering or computer science, usually have high starting salaries, many Arts graduates find success in well-paying fields too...

Does working in creative department (e.g. taking designer role) compulsory to know all these Adobe software? What about Canva? I believe using it is more convenient for common beginners. But mostly i checked the JD, they always put the Illustrator/Photoshop as requirement.

Hmm, if you want to grow in a designer role, it’s a good idea to get comfortable with both. Think of Canva as a quick-fix tool and Adobe as the pro kit

Graphic designer here, updating my portfolio to apply for agency jobs. What is a good number of projects to show in my portfolio? Does the same principle apply as CVs where you try to be succinct? Or for online portfolios is it better to show breadth?

Most designers these days tend to go digital. Like create your portfolio online using free website, easier to showcase your work and skills. How many? Hmm i would say 🤔 aim around 4-5 pieces that highlight different apesct of ur design work.

I made a switch myself, and what helped was doing freelance work in my new industry before committing fully. Upskilling with courses is also a great way to make a convincing case to future employers. The transition might feel slow, but it’s worth it to avoid regret later. Having savings is great too, so you’re already on a good path. Remember, the skills you’ve built over the years are assets, no matter the industry

If you’re looking to create a portfolio, you can include personal projects, mock-up designs, or any freelance work you’ve done. Websites like Behance, Wix, and Adobe Portfolio are popular and allow for easy browsing. Just put around 5–10 pieces that show off a range of skills, and try including a short description for each project explaining your creative process. Wanting to make extra? You may include positive feedbacks you got from your team, friends or clients.

For a fresh grad in UI/UX, expect around SGD 3.5k-4.5k monthly in Singapore, which works out to about SGD 42k-54k annually. It does vary based on the company and your portfolio, but that’s the typical starting point. Best of luck
